What
are the benefits of weight loss? |
| |
|
If
you are obese, you may have already been advised by your doctor to lose
some weight. The potential medical benefits of weight loss include, but
are not limited to, reduced blood pressure, lowering of blood sugar,
decreased blood cholesterol, and decreased risk of heart disease and
stroke. |

Do I
really need medical supervision? |
| |
|
It is
highly recommended to consult a physician before starting any weight loss
or exercise program. To be on an 800-calorie diet or less, you definitely
need to be supervised by a bariatrician. A bariatrician is a physician who
is knowledgeable in weight management. Supervision may mean going to your
doctor every 2 weeks. Between 800 and 1200 calories, you need regular
consultations after an initial physical with your physician. Diets that
provide 1200 or more calories are generally safe. However, you still want
to be checked by your doctor before you start.
The table below summarizes our recommendations.
